Experimental parametric investigation on the behavior of adhesively bonded CFRP/steel joints

This paper presents an extensive experimental and numerical study on the behavior of CFRP/Steel adhesively bonded double strap joints (DSJ). A total 50 DSJ specimens were tested under static tensile loading. The digital image correlation (DIC) was used to measure backface deformation. six adhesives that feature different stiffness, strength, ductility, toughness analyzed. parametric including several variants carried out. influencing parameters considered are following: adhesive type, thickness, CFRP elastic modulus, length, surface treatment, steel thickness. results revealed rigid commonly in construction industry do not provide best performance for CFRP/steel joints, instead, tough which combine high strength ductility more suitable strengthening metallic infrastructures. Steel plastic yielding has a significant influence behavior, failure modes joint. model validated with data developed ABAQUS. observations modes, joint strengths, discussed using model. efficiency is highly recommended as design criterion joints.
